What Is Matsumoto? The Castle, the Old Streets and the Northern Alps

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide is for visitors who want to know what Matsumoto is before deciding how long to stay. It covers the castle, the old streets, the mountain areas, the hot springs and the events, using the official tourism site of Matsumoto City, read on 2026-10-04.

A castle town below the Alps

Matsumoto sits almost in the centre of Nagano Prefecture. The city describes a historic castle town around Matsumoto Castle, which has more than 400 years of history, set against the Northern Alps. Peaks there reach about 3,000 metres. The city calls itself the City of Learning, the City of Music and the City of Mountains.

Matsumoto Castle

The castle is a National Treasure, like Himeji, Hikone, Inuyama and Matsue castles. It was built in the Sengoku period, the 15th and 16th centuries. The city says it has the oldest surviving keep with five stories outside and six floors inside. Its black walls stand out against the mountains.

The keep was built in a time of war. The Tsukimi Yagura, a moon-viewing tower, was added in a time of peace. The city says the combination of the two styles is a highlight. Look for the gun ports and stone-dropping openings. From the sixth-floor windows you can see the city and the Northern Alps.

The city's information page gives these details.

To avoid queues, the city suggests a web ticket on your phone and a look at the crowd forecast calendar on the castle's official site.

Nakamachi and Nawate streets

Two streets within walking distance of the castle have different moods. Nakamachi Street has black and white namako walls and shops with folk-art furniture and crafts, plus cafes. Nawate Street runs beside the Metoba River, is pedestrian only and is known for a frog symbol. It has taiyaki sellers and antique shops, and leads to Yohashira Shrine.

The mountains

Hot springs, crafts and events

The city says there are 16 hot spring areas within its borders. It also names local crafts such as Matsumoto temari balls, folk-art furniture, woodwork and daruma dolls.

Events include a night cherry blossom festival at the castle in spring, the May of Crafts, the National Treasure Taiko Festival, the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival and the Matsumoto Bonbon dance in summer. The city says snow is relatively light in winter, but a castle covered in snow is a rare sight.

How long to stay

The city's own sample plans range from a day trip through the downtown area to one night with Kamikochi and the castle, and a two-day cherry blossom trip. It also lists a plan for rainy days built around art museums and local culture.

For a first visit, a day in town covers the castle, Nakamachi and Nawate. Add a second day for a mountain trip. Because Kamikochi is closed in winter and the highland roads close in late November, the season matters for the second day.

The city also says its Nakamachi and Nawate streets are within walking distance of the castle, so you can link them on foot.
